Founded in 1969 in Denver, Colorado, Denver Biomedical, Inc. is a small company but a global leader in designing and manufacturing specialized critical care medical devices for fluid management of ascites and pleural effusion. The Denver® Ascites Shunts, including double-valved and single-valved devices, continue to be market leaders in shunting ascites. In addition to the surgical technique, the Percutaneous Access Kit provides a percutaneous placement of both the venous and peritoneal catheters. All Denver Ascites Shunts now feature Silique, a surface modification to silicone, which offers a smoother, less tacky surface with a lower coefficient of friction, while retaining the physical properties of silicone and all shunt functions.

The company's paraPRO® paracentesis needle offers several safety features and benefits, which places it ahead of its competitors. The two-part trocar, valved drain port, drainage cannula and vented cap permit a safe, practical, and easy removal of fluid from the peritoneal cavity.

The revolutionary Pleurx® Pleural Catheter System, offering new comfort to patients with pleural effusions, provides control of effusion and relief from shortness of breath without the need for lengthy hospital stays and the costs associated with the hospitalization. The physician may place the catheter in an outpatient setting, and patients or family members can then drain the fluid at home.

The Denver® Pleural Effusion Shunt and the Denver® Pleural Effusion Shunt with Externalized Pump Chamber are designed to provide physicians and patients an alternative to conventional therapy in managing intractable pleural effusions and chylothorax to both pediatric and adult patients.
